Research interests

Adaptation and acclimation to environmental stress conditions (radiation, cold, heat, salt) with a special focus on alpine plants

I investigate mechanism of model plants, which allow these plants to tolerate extreme climatic conditions. The studies are performed with plants cultivated and exposed under controlled conditions e.g. between Arabidopsis thaliana and Thellungiella salsuginea under salt stress. Most investigations are performed with alpine plants (Soldanella alpina, Ranunulus glacialis and Geum montanum) in their natural environment (changes of temperature and radiation).

In every model plant the photosynthetic response to extreme climatic conditions is investigated. I investigate the photosynthetic electron transport, the consumption of electrons for the carbon assimilation, the photorespiration and for alternative electron acceptors. Possible pigments involved in photoprotection (flavonoids, carotenoids) and the dissipation of excess energy as heat is measured.
